ICCREA Banca

Part of the Italian Co-operative Credit System, Iccrea Banca is the parent company of the Iccrea Banking Group (IBG). It is made up of financial institutions providing exclusive products and services as well as consulting and active support to 350BCCs (Banche di Credito Cooperativo – Co-operative Credit Banks) in Italy. IBG’s main mission is to develop, in a sustainable and responsible way, BCC market shares and competitive positioning and to maximise their added value in serving local economic development.

Thanks to this strong tie, all group companies aim to reflect the characteristics that distinguish co-operative banking and which are expressed in the close relationship they have with the local communities in which they are based and operate.

The current corporate structure of Iccrea Banking Group dates back to 1995 and the creation of Iccrea Holding, the second tier business institution of the Italian Cooperative Credit System, which controls all the group’s companies and whose capital is in turn held by BCCs. On 16 September 2016, Iccrea Holding, the Iccrea Holding parent company and Iccrea Banca, Istituto Centrale del Credito Cooperativo, formalised the reverse merger between the two companies. The merger, operational starting 1 October, places Iccrea Banca at the top of the Iccrea Banking Group, allowing the Group to have a parent company with a banking licence, and aligning itself with the requirements required by the European Central Bank. As the parent company, Iccrea Banca monitors, guides and coordinates IBG’s enterprises to achieve tailored quality products and services, defining business strategies, results planning and monitoring. Iccrea Holding shareholders include BCCs, the Italian Federation of BCCs (Federcasse), local federations and other territorial bodies.

Companies of the Iccrea Banking Group provide advanced financial instruments, products for savings and pension management, credit solutions for families and small and medium-size enterprises, M&A finance and support to corporate foreign business, such as import/export and internationalisation.

Italian Cooperative Credit System

Italian BCCs first emerged towards the end of the 19th century with the establishment of the first rural co-operative bank. The aim was to help their members cope with poverty and to defeat the blight of usury. BCCs developed among rural populations, including them in the financial system by providing access to credit. Since then every BCC has maintained a close and profound commitment to their reference territory, interweaving their own history with that of the local community.

Today, the Italian Co-operative Credit System – whose core business focuses on retail banking, micro and small-scale enterprise – is an important player in the Italian banking market and a valid competitor of the major domestic banking groups.

In order to retain the advantages derived from small-scale operations and the close proximity to the local community and to maximise economies of scale, Italian Cooperative Credit Banks are part of a national system structured around two general areas: the ‘associative’ area that includes a national federation and 15 local federations of BCCs and the ‘business’ area, which is represented by the Iccrea Banking Group.

Italian Cooperative Credit Banking’s key figures:

  • 350 local Co-operative Credit Banks (BCCs)
  • More than 4,300 branches
  • More than 1,200,000 members
  • Around 36,000 employees
  • Almost 7 million customers
